Public Schools...
Pittsburgh's best public schools are located in its suburbs. The southern suburbs are widely considered by the local commuity to offer the best public school districts. Useful public school ranking sites are niche.com and greatschools.org. Both claim to factor actual test scores and college readiness into their ratings. Niche recently named Mt. Lebanon school district among the best in the nation. Ratings do very, however; as Pittsburgh Magazine recently listed Fox Chapel school district as its best.
Private Schools...
niche.com was used to identify the top ranked private schools in the Pittsburgh area. Unlike public schools, many top ranked private schools can be found within city limits. The Shadyside area of the city is home to two of the top five. Others near the top including Central Catholic and Oakland Catholic are also located in the eastern side of the city.
Universities...
Pittsburgh's largest and highest ranked universities are all located within 5 miles of one another. Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned educational institution, particularly in the field of engineering. The University of Pittsburgh is also a highly ranked and esteemed school. It consistently ranks among the nation's best schools, including its top ranked medical school. In all, there are more than 40 universities and colleges in the Pittsburgh region making it one of the nation's premiere college towns.
